Today the sun shines in Goma. I attended a church service at HEAL Africa’s hospital chapel and listened to 12 women and girls sing in a choir. Each were rape victims, going through various stages of reparative surgeries, finding healing through music.
A solo was performed by Beseme, a 22-year old brought to HEAL Africa at 19 years old after her village was attacked by a militia group. She was brutally gang-raped and blinded, her attackers gouged her eyes out after she recognized one of them. They also gave her HIV. She now lives with another woman, thrown out by her family for becoming pregnant out of wedlock, and helps care for her 4-year old little girl.
