January 20, 2009 I traveled today to Kanyabayonga, the regional capital, 17km from Kayna. Government soldiers line the roads with heavy weapons. I keep my cameras low for fear of instigating trouble. The men look at me furtively. There are no other white people in this area... all have fled the insecurity.
I am with several counselors with HEAL Africa. There has been a severe rape case reported and we are going to investigate. The woman was attacked in her home by two soldiers, her nephew forced to lie quiet under the bed while she was raped. She was violated so brutally she can barely walk.
